Tomorrow will be the coronation of King Charles III – a lavish affair involving golden carriages, horses, and funny hats.
Personally I’m not a royalist. I don’t have any strong feelings towards the monarchy and I would probably be just as happy if we were a republic.
I think the idea of a family being regarded as Royal just because they happened to be born into it is outdated. They shouldn’t be thought of as any better than the peasants in the country just because they have a lot of money.
However, saying that, it seems the monarchy does bring in a lot of money to the UK. According to Brand Finance, a London based brand valuation firm, the monarchy brought in £1.7 billion in 2017 and apparently costs UK taxpayers just 1p per day.
This includes tourism, the Crown Jewels, the surplus from the Crown estate, and its indirect effects on businesses. Products that have a Royal warrant or display a coat of arms generally have higher prices.
There’s also programs like The Crown which are very popular and I think the monarchy does help improve the U.K.’s image on the global stage.
So I think on the whole the monarchy probably benefits the UK. But I won’t be pledging allegiance to the King which seems a bit of a weird idea to me.
I’ll be watching the coronation though because it will be an interesting spectacle. Regardless of whether you support it or not it will be a bit of history happening. Something that hasn’t happened for about 70 years.
And if nothing else it’s an excuse for a party. There’s an event happening in my village tomorrow afternoon so I will probably go and have a look at that if it’s not raining. The current forecast shows that there is a high chance of rain tomorrow afternoon so we’ll see.
Hi Alex
It’s been a while since I’ve heard from you. Hope your keeping well and all is going smooth and chilled…
I suppose my view on this is pretty basic really.. I guess the fact is we are all born into some type of family, some good, some bad.. But would hate being in a family, where my life was totally ruled by strict conditions, as to the type of person I was. How I act, where I live, choice of friends, how I’m seen by others and other rules, that dictate on how I live my life.
It’s tough enough dealing with just ordinary stuff that makes you limited in this world and I see royalty is quite limiting.. I much prefer to be a not so stuffy, free spirited hippy type with my own free will to experience what I can…..lol
hi Kaz, yeah things are going all right thanks. Hope all is well with you. Yeah I agree with you. If you are Royal you kind of have to follow the family business and won’t get any privacy. You can’t just do your own thing I guess. People look at them and say “oh they have loads of money” yes, that’s true, but there are some serious drawbacks to it!
