How I use an e-reader independently

I like reading but I can’t turn the pages on a real book. So I have to read e-books usually on my computer. I wanted to find an e-reader that I could use independently to read away from the PC. I thought it would be nice during the summer to read outside of my garden.

So I looked for one and I managed to find something that I could use independently. It took a bit of trial and error though.

I read all my e-books on the Kobo desktop app, so I bought a Kobo Libra 2 e-reader in order for it to be compatible.

Next, I needed to be able to turn the pages independently. The Kobo Libra 2 has 2 buttons on it which you can use to turn the page or you can swipe your finger on the touchscreen. Neither of these options would have been very useful to me.

There are some devices on the market where you can press a button on a remote control to operate e-readers. I first tried this device which is a kind of ring with buttons that is meant to be a TikToc/Kindle page-turner. I tried it with the Kobo Libra 2 and it didn’t work so I returned it.

The second thing I decided to try was the SYUKUYU RF Remote Control Page Turner. It’s basically a handheld remote with a big button on it. There’s another part that has a clip that you clip onto your e-reader. Then when you press the button it turns the page. And it WORKS!

I am able to hold the remote and press the button independently to turn the pages. I have successfully managed to read numerous pages of my e-book in the garden whilst enjoying the warm summer sunshine.

The downside is that you can’t go to a previous page using the device, it just keeps turning the page forward when you press the button. So if you turn too many pages you need to get someone else to turn the page back for you which is not ideal.

I also do need to get someone else to click on the right book to begin with, but once that’s done I’m away.

But it’s still a success as it does allow me to use my e-reader largely independently.
