I’m trying to find a couple of permanent carers again which isn’t always an easy process.
We’re not using the agency anymore as they’re unreliable and we’ve decided to employ carers privately instead.
We’ve been advertising online and have received a lot of applications which is good. This time last year we had nothing so it’s completely different now. We literally waited months without receiving a single application so it’s a nice change.
I think it’s to do with the pandemic being less of a problem now. People are probably less wary of being in close proximity to people.
However even though we’ve had quite a lot of applicants most of them haven’t been great. I narrow them down to a few of the best to do zoom calls with. Then if all goes well I meet up with them at my home so that they can get a feel of what it would be like to work with me.
But the last time I tried to meet a prospective carer in person they didn’t turn up. We spoke on zoom and agreed to meet and she seemed happy about it. But when the agreed time came she didn’t show and she didn’t answer her phone or reply to emails. It’s annoying.
The least they could have done was to say they aren’t coming. If they’ve changed their minds then fair enough but to just ghost me is infuriating. It’s not the first time either. There have been at least 2 or 3 occasions now when this has happened.
I guess it shows who can’t be trusted.
I don’t understand why they don’t just say they aren’t coming instead of making us wait and wasting our time. It’s basic manners. It doesn’t take much effort on their part so there is no excuse for it. Unless something serious had happened, of course. But that’s unlikely.
So we just have to keep looking at the applications and try to find the right person. I’m optimistic that we’ll eventually find someone who will do a good job. It’s a numbers game. Receive enough applications and there’s got to be at least one good banana in the bunch.
Hi Alex, its a tough call finding someone that understands exactly and fully what is involved being a carer. Each person has their own unique individual set up of requirements, so they have to be prepared to learn all they can (if they don’t have the experience initially) what is involved in that persons care.
I know there’s a few care places about these days, it seems like they just pop up, probably some person thinking they might make a go at opening some agency for carers, thinking its a good money making scheme….lol….. with their few bob, no doubt borrowed from a trusty bank manager wanting to invest in a good idea, even if they have no clue on how to run a care centre..lol
We’ve had some rum carers see to mum when she was ill and now dad needs them, so its all fun and games here too…
Hopefully, like you say, the more applications, the more chance of finding that one decent carer that suits.
All the best in your search. Being the forever optimist, do think there will be someone out there, thats just perfect for the job….”Bonne chance” as they say in France…(smiley face on) as I can’t see any emojis on here… lol
hi Kaz, thanks for the luck, I think I might need it! I found great ones in the past so it can happen again. Hope you find some good ones for your Dad.
Good Luck Alex I really hope you can find the right person , Dave is now having carers in every morning and its a minefield out there
thanks Karen. It definitely is a minefield. I hope you find some good ones for Dave. xx
Hi Alex I really do empathise with you I live in sheltered accommodation and, although I have a care team, I struggle to find carers to take me out too. It’s finding people who don’t already work at care establishments, and then those carers having the right qualifications to care for you It’s a real struggle isn’t it
Hi Holly, thanks for the empathy! Yeah it is a struggle. It’s like trying to find a unicorn.
